At Christmas we seem to purchase a lot!! We buy lots of gifts, we buy new decorations, we buy food and drinks and entertain, and we may even buy a new outfit for all those Christmas parties.

So how can we be more mindful about all this spending at Christmas? How can we be a conscious consumer?

Below are some of the things that we can consider as a conscious consumer over the Christmas period.

1. Check the label

When you check the label or the product description, consider these questions:

· Where was this product made?

· Who made it?

· Were their conditions fair?

· How was it made?

· Was the environment affected?

· Is there palm oil in it?

· Do I recognise the ingredient names?

· Are these ingredients safe for my body and the planet?

2. Opt for natural

Products made from natural materials, be that clothes, toys or skin care, will break down and return to the earth instead of contributing to landfill or polluting our environment.

Clothes made from natural fibres, wrapping paper made from recycled office paper that is free from glitter and other synthetic embellishments, wooden toys and games, and natural skin care products that are free from microbeads and excessive plastic packaging are things to consider.

3. Choose to reuse

We do this all year round as much as possible, but maybe it is something you could start to consider now at this time of year. Things such as storing food in something reusable like a glass container or jar and giving that as a gift to your Christmas party host that they can reuse.

Or using reusable beeswax wraps to cover bowls, plates or wrap food with. Instead of buying a new (or several new) outfits for this time of year, reuse an outfit you already own. Or better yet, see if you can swap an outfit with a family member or friend.

4. Pay attention to packaging

When purchasing products, be that gifts, decorations or food, pay attention to how they’re packaged and how they reach you. Choosing products that are packaged in no, minimal, reusable or recyclable packaging is the best!! Take your reusable shopping bags with you when shopping for gifts. A natural fibre string bag is light but sturdy and will roll up small enough to fit in your bag or glovebox.

5. Look for companies that give back

There are a lot of companies out there doing amazing things, supporting local communities, local tradespeople and charities. Find ones that support things that you believe in!!
